The local-jail VINE registration should not be assumed to carry into that track. BOP and federal pretrial custody are also outside Virginia Jail VINE, so a federal case must be followed through BOP, the federal docket, the U.S. Marshals Service, or the holding facility.
Scope matters: a local VINE event can confirm that one agency reported a custody change. It cannot prove that all local, state, federal, or immigration custody ended.

The search is a starting point. The correct agency and identifier matter more than a loose same-name match.
If no result appears, check spelling and agency first. Next, use the County inquiry with In Custody left unchecked for a historical Roanoke County/Salem Jail booking. WVRJ's public lookup is framed as a current-incarceration check. A local release or transfer that no longer appears there may require a call, a saved VINE event, or a request for the release entry.
Note: A person can have several booking episodes, so match the VINE event to the same facility and custody period.

The exact fields and labels depend on the agency feed. Read what the live record actually says instead of renaming a field. Custody status is the central item, while the agency, identifier, and event type supply the scope. A released result is useful event evidence, but the jail's actual Release Date or VADOC paperwork is better historical proof.

A scheduled date, when supplied by another custody system, remains prospective. It can change. VINELink should not be treated as a permanent archive once updates stop after release. Preserve a notification with the time, agency, and person identifier, then compare it with the official booking or release record.
Roanoke County's historical jail inquiry can supply a stronger second check for a County/Salem Jail event. Leave In Custody unchecked, open the matching booking, and compare the VINE event with In Custody: No and the actual Release Date. The inquiry may also show a Scheduled Release Date, which is only prospective. If the record shows Multiple Bookings, open each episode because an old booking can be closed while a newer one remains active.
For WVRJ, the same method is not available online. Its public JailTracker configuration is current-only, even though the underlying software contains a released-retention setting. That hidden setting does not create a public released archive. A WVRJ VINE event should be checked by calling 540-378-3700 or requesting the commitment, transfer, and release entries. This is especially important because WVRJ can hold local, state-responsible, federal, and contract prisoners. The event may mark a handoff rather than return to the community.
Set Roanoke County Release Alerts

Telephone and email are documented methods, with text or app choices where offered. Only choose options that the live record presents. Keep access to the selected email address or phone because a verification step may be required.

- Complete any email or text confirmation shown by the service.

The PIN confirms receipt of a telephone alert. It does not verify the underlying release, so the reporting jail or corrections record should still be checked.
Do not rely on VINE as the only safety plan or as a promise of advance warning. Agency data can lag, a particular event may not be available, and phone or email service can fail. Roanoke County VINE to NAAVI
Roanoke County's Victim Resources page is unusually clear about the local and state split. It points to WVRJ JailTracker for current custody, VINELink for local-jail notification, and VADOC's state track separately. A person transferred into a VADOC sentence has crossed from the local VINE stage to the post-sentence notification stage.
NAAVI can search by name, county, or DOC ID. Depending on enrollment and the case, VADOC notifications can cover transfer, death, work release, advance release, actual release, a name change, escape and recapture, parole interview, parole decision, and return to custody. These categories are broader than a simple jail-release alert. They still depend on eligibility and the choices available in the state service.
The handoff is not automatic. Keep the local VINE event, identify the VADOC person by DOC ID when possible, and register through NAAVI or VADOC Victim Services for the state track. If a local booking closes with a transfer, describe it as a transfer rather than a community release. State custody or supervision should then be checked in the VADOC locator.
Note: Local Jail VINE and VADOC NAAVI are separate registrations, even when both records concern the same Roanoke County person.
Roanoke County State Notification Records

The state search supplements, rather than replaces, the County/Salem Jail booking detail and any local VINE event from the earlier custody stage.

A state notification may report an advance or actual release event, but the signed Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole provide stronger documentation of the state release. When an event conflicts with a VADOC result, save the exact language and access time. Contact the agency that owns the underlying custody record. Notification systems depend on agency feeds, so correcting the source record is more effective than treating the notification service as the owner of the release calculation.
Confirm Roanoke County Release Events

A no-result cannot establish that the person was never booked or returned to the community. A VINE transfer event cannot establish freedom from all custody. Names alone also fail when several people share them. The best conclusion states the system, agency, event, and observation date, then identifies whether a release disposition was obtained.
