County/Salem Jail Release Paths

The Roanoke County Sheriff's Office operates this jail in the courthouse complex in Salem. A booking can end in several ways. The person may leave for the community after bond, a court order, time served, or completion of a local sentence. The person may instead move to Western Virginia Regional Jail, enter Virginia Department of Corrections authority, or transfer to a federal or immigration custodian. Those outcomes all close or change a local booking, yet only some are community releases.

The official booking detail is the starting record. Its actual Release Date shows that a specific episode ended. A release disposition or transfer destination, when available, answers what happened next. If the public detail does not state the destination, call Inmate Records or seek the existing release entry. Do not infer release merely because a name is absent from a current list. Roanoke County is especially prone to that error because the County/Salem Jail and WVRJ are separate facilities in the same city.

Confirm County/Salem Jail Release

The Roanoke County Jail Inmate Inquiry searches current and historical bookings. Leave the In Custody box unchecked. Search by name, subject number, or booking number, and use the housing choice labeled “Roanoke County - Salem Jail.” Booking From Date and Booking To Date narrow booking dates, not release dates. Open each matching episode rather than relying on the result row alone.

1. Match the person with a subject or booking number when possible.
2. Keep In Custody unchecked so released episodes remain eligible.
3. Open every booking marked by the Multiple Bookings indicator.
4. Confirm “In Custody: No” and read the actual Release Date.
5. Check the disposition, court case, or receiving custodian if transfer is possible.
6. Call the jail docket or Inmate Records for a same-day or disputed event.

A Scheduled Release Date is only prospective. It may change due to court orders, credits, discipline, warrants, or detainers. The actual Release Date is stronger evidence that one booking ended, but it still does not prove where the person went. Same-day questions should go to the office that owns the custody entry. The Roanoke County Sheriff's Office directs custody questions to its inquiry or jail docket. Inmate Records can address a booking or release-field problem. Published hours are not supplied for those specific lines, so call rather than assume a walk-in schedule.

Use the booking number, full name, and approximate custody dates when calling. Ask whether the entry reflects release to the community or transfer to another custodian. Staff may restrict private or protected details, but a focused request for an existing adult booking and release record is clearer than a broad demand for all files about a person.

Request County/Salem Release Records

When the inquiry is incomplete, use the County's Request Public Records page and JustFOIA link. Virginia FOIA allows requests by mail, fax, email, phone, or in person; a special form and the word “FOIA” are not required. A written request is still useful because it fixes the booking, date range, requested fields, electronic format, and cost ceiling.

Ask for the existing adult booking and release record, actual release date and time, release type or transfer destination to the extent releasable, release authorization, and property-return acknowledgment. The County must make an initial response within five working days, subject to statutory response options and extensions. That deadline is not a promise that every record will be delivered within five days. Virginia law also permits limits on imprisonment records and bars disclosure of covered sealed or expunged material.

Costs may cover actual search, access, duplication, and supplies. The County lists ten cents for a one-sided black-and-white page, twenty cents double-sided, sixteen cents for one-sided color, and thirty-two cents double-sided. It waives totals of five dollars or less and may seek advance payment above two hundred dollars. Electronic delivery and a cost estimate can reduce surprise. State in writing that segregable, nonexempt parts should be produced if another part is withheld.

County/Salem Transfers Need Follow-Up

A transfer is not a release to the street. If the County detail shows another facility or agency, continue in that system. WVRJ's public lookup can confirm present custody there, though it does not advertise a historical released view. VADOC's locator covers institutions, community supervision, certain local or regional jail placements under state authority, institutional hospitals, and CCAP. Federal sentences belong in BOP; pretrial federal custody may remain with USMS; immigration custody belongs in ICE's locator.

Virginia Jail VINE can supply a contemporaneous release or transfer alert tied to the correct local record. It is not a permanent archive. Post-sentence VADOC notifications require a separate NAAVI or Victim Services registration, so a local VINE enrollment should never be assumed to follow a person into state custody.

County/Salem Jail Local Role

The Sheriff's Office jail sits at the county courthouse complex. Corrections, court security, and civil process are core Sheriff's Office functions. The Jail Division also identifies a Behavioral Health Case Manager/Re-Entry Coordinator role created in 2023. That fact shows a local coordination point, but it does not guarantee any service or outcome for a specific person.

The County/Salem Jail must also be kept distinct from Roanoke City. Searching the wrong locality can produce no match even when the person is held elsewhere in the Roanoke area. Start with the arresting or committing jurisdiction, then verify the housing facility printed on the record.

WVRJ History Changes Release Proof

Western Virginia Regional Jail opened in 2009 after severe crowding in older member-locality facilities. It serves four member jurisdictions and can hold state-responsible, federal, and contract prisoners. This regional history matters even on a County/Salem Jail page because a Roanoke County prisoner may be moved between the two Salem facilities without entering the community.

A roster disappearance is therefore weak evidence. Stronger proof identifies the booking, actual Release Date, disposition, and next custodian. If those sources conflict, note when each system was checked and ask the agency that created the disputed field to correct or explain it. Do not silently choose the more convenient date.
