Information You Submit
Queries Sent to Search Partners
A name, locality, or other term entered into an embedded search tool is transmitted to the third-party company that operates that tool. That provider processes the query under its own terms and privacy practices. Roanoke County Released Inmates does not keep or log those search terms on its own systems. Visitors should review the provider's notice before submitting information they consider sensitive.
Messages Sent to Us
If someone sends an email or uses a contact form, we retain the message and related contact details long enough to read it, respond, and maintain ordinary correspondence records. We do not share those messages outside the organization unless disclosure is required by law, a valid court order, or another binding legal process. A message should not include sensitive jail, medical, financial, or identity information that is not needed for the question.
Technical Data Collected Automatically
Routine server, analytics, and advertising systems may receive technical details when a page loads. These records help deliver pages, diagnose faults, understand site use, and address security events. The data may include:
- The internet protocol address used for the request
- The browser name and software version
- The device category and operating system
- The pages opened and approximate time spent on them
- The referring website, when that information is supplied
- The date and time associated with the request
Cookie Settings
Cookies and similar browser storage may be used to measure how visitors move through the site and to support advertising or basic site functions. A visitor can block or remove cookies through browser settings. Some features may work differently, lose preferences, or fail to load after cookies are disabled.
Reasons We Use Information
Collected information is used only for ordinary site and service functions. Those purposes include:
- Keeping pages available, responsive, and reliable
- Sending an entered query to the selected search partner
- Learning which Roanoke County record pages visitors find useful
- Finding, investigating, and correcting technical problems
- Displaying advertising that may reflect a visitor's interests
Privacy Beyond This Site
Links may lead to the Roanoke County Sheriff's Office and County/Salem Jail inquiry, Western Virginia Regional Jail, Virginia Department of Corrections, Virginia courts, VINELink, BOP, ICE, or an outside search tool. Once a visitor follows one of those links, the destination's own privacy policy governs its collection, use, retention, and disclosure of data. We do not set those rules.
Some advertising companies may use their own cookies or similar technology to measure activity across multiple websites and select interest-based ads. That processing occurs on the advertising partner's systems rather than ours. Browser controls and the partner's opt-out tools may provide choices about that activity.
Parties That May Receive Data
We do not sell personal data. Information may still pass to a limited set of parties when they perform a service or when disclosure is legally compelled:
- Search partners that receive and process submitted queries
- Analytics providers that measure traffic and page performance
- Advertising networks that deliver or measure ads
- Law-enforcement or government bodies acting under a valid legal order
Each provider may collect information directly through its code or service. Its own privacy policy describes that processing. A legally required disclosure is limited to what the applicable process demands.
Our Security Approach
We use standard administrative and technical practices intended to protect information in our control. No internet-connected service, transmission method, or storage system is fully secure. We cannot promise that data will never be lost, intercepted, misused, or accessed without authorization. Visitors should use care when choosing what to send through email, forms, or third-party search tools.
Visitors Younger Than Eighteen
This site is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under eighteen. If a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult believes a minor submitted personal data, they may notify us and request that the information be reviewed and deleted where appropriate.
Available Privacy Requests
Subject to applicable law, verification, and any lawful exception, a person may ask us to:
- Provide a copy of personal data held about that person
- Correct information that is inaccurate
- Delete information that is eligible for erasure
- Opt out of processing where an applicable right permits it
These requests apply only to information under our control. Roanoke County, VADOC, a court, a jail, or a search provider must handle requests concerning its own records or systems.
Changes to This Notice
We may revise this Privacy Notice as services, technology, or legal duties change. A revised version becomes effective when it is posted here with an updated effective date. Continued use after publication means the visitor accepts the revised notice.
