Roanoke County Release Mugshot Meaning
A booking photograph documents appearance at intake. The Roanoke County/Salem Jail historical inquiry attaches dated photos to booking details, so an image may remain visible after the selected episode changes to In Custody: No. The image alone says nothing about the final disposition. It also cannot show whether the person was released to the community, transferred to WVRJ, moved to VADOC, or taken by another agency.
Confirm the image against the Booking Number and Booking Date, then read the actual Release Date. If Multiple Bookings appears, open each episode. A newer active booking and an older released booking can belong to the same person, and different people can share a name. Compare identifiers without republishing needless personal details.

The detail adds Booking History, actual Release Date, bonds, charges, and court information. A Scheduled Release Date is prospective. It may be blank or change, so it cannot turn a current image into a released-person record.

The interface ties a photo to a booking episode. Its fields must be read together because the photo itself does not reveal release, destination, or court outcome.
Request Roanoke County Booking Photos
Virginia Code § 2.2-3706(A)(1) requires a criminal-law-enforcement public body to provide a routine adult intake booking photograph on request. The stated exception permits temporary withholding when disclosure would jeopardize a felony investigation, and only while that risk lasts. Juvenile, sealed, expunged, privacy, and security rules create other limits.
Use Roanoke County's records page for the County/Salem Jail booking. Virginia FOIA does not require a special form or the word “FOIA,” though a written request creates a clear record. For a WVRJ booking, send the request to WVRJ's FOIA officer and state that Roanoke County was the committing member jurisdiction.
- Identify the full name, aliases if known, and date of birth or Subject Number.
- Give the Booking Number and approximate intake date, and name the correct facility.
- Ask for the existing routine adult intake photograph tied to that booking.
- Also request the booking and release entry needed to connect the image to the ended episode.
- Choose electronic delivery and ask for an estimate before a stated cost ceiling.
- Request segregable portions and a citation to any Virginia Code basis for withholding.

No Roanoke Release Mugshot App
No verified Roanoke County Sheriff or WVRJ inmate-release mobile app provides an alternate released-photo archive. WVRJ's current JailTracker supports images, but its public setup is current-only. A name or photo can disappear when the record is no longer in the public current view, and that absence cannot identify what happened next.
Roanoke County's RoCo Mobile app is for general news, alerts, calendars, notices, directory listings, and web services. It is not an inmate search or mugshot tool. Claims that an official app supplies recent release photos should therefore be checked against the Sheriff's own pages before being repeated.
For WVRJ history, request the routine photograph and release entry from the regional jail. Call 540-378-3700 when current presence is the immediate question. A current WVRJ image relates to that intake and does not prove a prior County/Salem Jail booking.
Match Roanoke Mugshots to Custody
A County booking photo, a WVRJ image, and a VADOC correctional image document different custody events. A person held only for a short County/Salem Jail stay may never have a VADOC photograph. Conversely, a VADOC image is tied to the state correctional record and should not be labeled as the Roanoke County intake photo without evidence.
Federal sources have another limit. The BOP locator is not a mugshot gallery, and a federal pretrial detainee may have been held for USMS at a contract jail. Use the holding facility's record or the applicable USMS Booking Photograph Disclosure Policy. Privacy and law-enforcement rules may limit production. A BOP release result can help date federal custody, but it does not authenticate a local booking image.

An official Sheriff's or prosecutor's release, or a reputable local report, may preserve a booking image after a roster changes. Check the publication date, caption, named agency, and whether the report identifies a specific booking. Then review the later court disposition and the jail's actual Release Date. A press image is secondary evidence and can remain online after the source record changes.
Private photo aggregators can be stale, mismatched, or detached from later sealing. They may repeat initial charges without the final outcome. No commercial mugshot publisher should be treated as an official source, and no private removal service is endorsed. An old image on a private page cannot prove that a person was released, is currently in custody, or has a specific case result.
Use only the smallest set of facts needed to match the event. A publicly displayed home address, physical description, long charge history, or identification number need not be copied merely because a search screen exposes it.
Note: A dated agency caption can support identity, but only the custodian and court records can establish the booking end and legal outcome.
Roanoke Mugshots After Record Sealing
Virginia sealing and expungement can change official access. A covered sealed or expunged law-enforcement record cannot be disclosed as though it remained public. Juvenile records follow separate confidentiality rules. The precise remedy depends on the case, disposition, effective law, and court order, so search absence should never be used to claim that no booking occurred.
When an official Roanoke County image should no longer appear, start with the agency that maintains the record. Identify the page, booking, and legal basis for correction or restriction. For a court record, contact the clerk that entered the order. If an official source corrects a release date or removes a covered photo, update any saved notes so an earlier screen is not treated as current.
